Paradigm A.
Regardless if you're an elite athlete or just starting your fitness journey you SHOULD know how important recovery for sport and performance is. If not keep reading, if yes keep reading.
Good sleep and faster, good recovery is a key to perform better.
You ever tried to smash Deadlift session or fast bike ride after sleepless night or day after stressful, exhausting day? I'm sure everyone did at least once and if so, then you know how much different and more difficult it was compering to training after great sleep or relaxing day.
Research suggests that increased quality rest can noticeably improve performance across many different sports. Additional sleep has been associated with increased speed and accuracy in sports such as running, basketball, and swimming. Some athletes who increase their amount of sleep also reported improved mood and reduced fatigue.
Sleep deprivation in athletes is associated with a number of undesirable effects. Some signs that an athlete may not be getting enough quality rest include:
Quicker Exhaustion: If an athlete begins to feel overly tired during normal activities, it could be a sign they are not getting enough rest. Research suggests that sleep deprivation can cause athletes to become exhausted more quickly7, which can reduce performance, even during training.Daytime Sleepiness: Feeling sleepy during the day is a common side effect8 of sleep loss and may affect athletic performance.
Decreased Reaction Time: Sleep deprivation is linked to decreased reaction time, which can be particularly noticeable for athletes in sports that require quick reflexes.
Difficulty Making Decisions: Adequate rest supports executive functions10 in the brain, which are important for decision-making. Sleep-deprived individuals may find it difficult to make decisions quickly.
Injury or Illness: Sleep is an important time for cells and tissue in the body to recover. Poor sleep may mean that the body does not have enough time to repair after the stress of training, which can lead to injury or sickness. Sleep deprivation has been associated with increased injury risk in young athletes.
Sleep is an essential aspect of any healthy and active life. Proper rest encourages recovery and performance for athletes, and it can be as important as diet or training. Learning to increase sleep quality and quantity helps athletes stay strong while pushing to reach new goals.
According to Patrick Cohn in How Stress Can Affect Sports Performance, stress is often viewed as a limitation, but in reality it can also be beneficial, helping to motivate the athlete. Cohn explains, “in the right amount, stress helps you prepare, focus, and perform at your optimal level. Conversely, too much stress, or bad stress, can cause performance anxiety, which hurts your health and does not allow you to play relaxed, confident, and focused in competition.” When you’re dealing with mental obstacles like apprehension or anxiety, your body follows suit by physically tightening up, and as a result this can lead to complications with athletic performance. To perform at your best, stress levels must be both effective and manageable.
So sleep, stress, anxiety.. Then pains, aches and all kind of illnesses.. How to fix it and get better at your sport?
CBD!
CBD has many of the same potential benefits as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), but without the psychoactive effects. Based on what we know right now, here’s why athletes from around the sporting world are getting into CBD and what you should know about it.
Research suggests that CBD shows promise in helping relieve pain and reduce inflammation, which could be useful for athletes participating in intense exercise. While THC can also be used to treat pain, it may cause unwanted side effects and could affect athletic performance.
The interesting part to CBD is that there are lots of CBD receptors in the part of the brain that perceives pain, so CBD has the potential to not only reduce inflammation at the site of injury but also change how we perceive the pain response in our brains – a double bonus of pain reduction
I think you’re always just looking for something that can help you improve performance. If I’m away at a tournament, I consistently use it for the week. I use the CBD gummy bears during the day to help me just to relax ever so slightly and then when I’m at home, I tend to use CBD when I’m working out more to help my recovery. Even if it makes the slightest little bit of difference – that can make all the difference in sport.
Cbd helps with coping with stress and is great for improving quality of sleep hence the recovery. I can't imagine I'd achieve so much without my cbd!
